Can you help tell the story of our village hall?
This December, our Village Hall reaches the remarkable age of 100 years.
Although constructed in 1898 as a school, it was only used for this purpose for 10 years and closed in 1908. To prevent it from being sold off, Mr James Gibb came to the rescue in 1926 and saved the building for the community. In the same year, the St Lawrence Village Hall Trust was set up.
A booklet on the Hall's first 50 years of history was put together some yers ago. We'd now like to continue the story by documenting the last 50 years and preserving the memories, events and people that have made the Hall such an important part of village life.
We're looking for anything that might help.
Do you remember a special event, celebration, fundraising effort or village occasion since the mid 1970s? Do you have photographs, newspaper cuttings, or interesting stories about the Hall? Perhaps you were involved with a club, committee or activity that met here over the years.
Even the smallest memory could add an important piece to the picture, so please don't assume what you have isn't worth sharing.
How should we celebrate?
We're also planning a special event to mark the Hall's centenary and would love to hear your ideas. What would you like to see? A display of old photographs? Live music? A community tea? An exhibition of village memories? Whatever your thoughts, we'd be delighted to hear them.
If you can help with the history project or have ideas for the centenary celebrations, please email us stlawrencevillagehall@gmail.com
Together, we can ensure that the story of our Village Hall's first century is recorded and celebrated for future generations.
